Day One of Arkansas fiscal session sees focus on budget increase for education, voucher programs LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It’s officially day one of the fiscal session in Arkansas and up for consideration by state lawmakers is a $6.3 billion budget. The budget, proposed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is a 1.76% increase over the previous budget and below the typical 3% increase of recent years. About $100 million of the increase is related to an education overhaul that Sanders signed last year that included a raise in minimum pay for teachers. More than $65 million of the increase will go toward a school voucher program that is being phased in through the new law. The House voted to pass a Republican-led bill Wednesday in hopes of preventing a federal default this summer. The House voted to pass the Limit, Save, Grow Act which would raise the government’s debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion and some of the Arkansas delegation in D.C. have come out in support of it. Rep. Rick Crawford tweeted his support for the bill, stressing the importance of passing it. |
