Maine Senators speak on a new bill proposed to revise CDC dog importation rule
This past summer Maine Senator Susan Collins formed a bipartisan group and sent a letter to the CDC outlining concerns about the rules. Last week, she received a response. “I received a letter from the CDC Director indicating that she had taken into account what she’d heard from stakeholders and the 14 senators bipartisan group that I gathered together to write to the CDC about the dog importation rule,” says Senator Collins, “so I think we’re making progress in that direction.” In the letter, the CDC explains the health risks they hope to prevent with some of the new rules, such as the microchipping and the six-month age minimum. Jan 16, 2023: Washington Post: Thom Tillis emerges as a bipartisan dealmaker as lawmakers fear dysfunction looms
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was basting her Thanksgiving turkey when Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) gave her a call with an important update: He had made progress in their effort to convince more Senate Republicans to vote for their bipartisan legislation to protect same-sex married couples. “He’s always working on it,” Collins said of the second-term senator. Her husband pleaded with her to get off the phone and focus on Thanksgiving, but less than a week later, the bill passed with 12 Republican votes — thanks in part to Tillis’s relentless focus. “He is an extraordinarily good vote counter,” Collins said.

Senators Coons and Tillis to introduce legislation promoting international digital freedom protection Delaware Senator Chris Coons (D) along with North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis (R) are taking on modern problems with what they hope are modern solutions. The two men plan to introduce the Advancing Digital Freedom Act of 2024, and the stated goal of this legislation is to make digital freedom a key U.S. foreign policy priority. The bill attempts to counter authoritarian regimes that use technology to suppress human rights and spread disinformation. October 24, 2024: Chris Coons on CNN to John Berman: “So, John, it’s important to get into some of the internals of polls that show that right track, wrong track number. More and more Americans think that their own economic situation and [that] of their community is getting better, as there are more jobs available, as the manufacturing rebirth that was started under President Biden and Kamala Harris because of the bipartisan infrastructure bill, because of the CHIPS and Science bill. Folks are feeling better about their own prospects, but they are very worried about the country being on the wrong track, and that’s largely because of political division. Look, as I’ve campaigned across the country recently in Ohio and Michigan, Arizona, and nearby in Pennsylvania. I hear a lot of concern from folks about the future of the country. Now, that’s for different reasons in different places, but they are concerned, in large part, because of the division and the nastiness they’re seeing on their televisions, in TV ads, and in discussions they’re having with family and friends about this election.”
