Sen. John Thune speaks at annual Reagan Bean Dinner in Fort Wayne
Thune is seeking to succeed Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as the party’s Senate leader, a post he has held since 2007. Thune’s chief opponent for the position is Texas Sen. John Cronyn. It’s a secret ballot, Thune said, but he has talked to incumbent Republicans and the party’s candidates about his candidacy. One of those candidates is Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., who is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Mike Braun, who is running for Indiana governor. “We’re not taking anything for granted, but we think (Banks) is going to win here and join us in the Senate,” Thune said.

Opinion - Shocks and surprises covering House Republicans for The Hill
Then came an even bigger surprise. Instead of going through with the election to succeed Boehner, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told colleagues just before they cast their ballots that he wasn’t the right guy at this time and was dropping out of the race. Then-Rep. Ryan Costello (R-Pa.) walked out and broke the news to reporters: “McCarthy dropped out.” “Say that again?” I replied, to make sure I had heard him right. McCarthy was out, he repeated; the House was back in a state of chaos. I immediately called Managing Editor Ian Swanson and told him what I had just learned. His headline properly captured the moment: “Shock! McCarthy drops Speaker bid.”

While Abbott Talks of “Murder,” Migrants Die
As Abbott spoke, two groups of immigrants were preparing to cross the Rio Grande from the bank opposite Shelby Park. According to a Department of Justice court filing Jan. 15, Eagle Pass Border Patrol agents received a call from their counterparts on the Mexican side of the river, stating that two men were struggling on the American side of the river near the Shelby Park boat ramp and that three migrants, a woman and her two children, had drowned near the boat ramp an hour earlier. A Border Patrol supervisor went to the gate manned by Texas National Guard officers and was told that he would not be allowed to enter the park, even in an emergency. In a pair of statements on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. House Rep. Henry Cuellar said the National Guard "physically barred" Border Patrol. Within hours, authorities on the Mexican side of the river found the bodies of three people – a mother and her two children, ages 8 and 10. They rescued the two men who they said had been struggling near the boat ramp.
