Republican candidates in Mississippi and across the U.S. have been raising money for months by promising to ban teaching of critical race theory. Mississippi Gov. Conservative Baptist Network, a major partnership of Southern Baptists across states, which called CRT “anti-gospel” and “divisive” and incompatible with efforts to oppose racism. Meanwhile, the far-right religious Center for Renewing America claims CRT seeks to eliminate the idea that “all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” And in a new book, theologian Dr. Voddie Baucham argues that CRT falsely creates its own version of Original Sin—racism—and gives no hope for forgiveness. Their theology proclaims antiracist education a greater evil than racism itself.

Critical race theory holds that the oppression of people of color continues to be prevalent in modern American society, especially at an implicit level, which leads to social and economic inequality. Consequently, this can only be combated by fundamentally changing society.
If held as a worldview, CRT aligns with postmodernism. As a note, Christians should thoughtfully and sparingly use this term, especially when referring to another Christian. We should be careful not to slander brothers and sisters in Christ who advocate for justice and social change with the phrase “critical race theory.”

Angela Burks Hill of Picayune took to Facebook to openly express her concerns about teaching our children the history of race in our schools. “There are a number of lawmakers who say they are willing to consider legislation in the 2022 session that would ban the possibility of critical race theory being taught in Mississippi schools,” Frank Corder of Y’all Politics, a conservative politics blog, wrote.
