Bob Brown: Kinzinger for VP — A ticket to unify the nation In most election years the candidates for vice president have little real effect on election outcomes. The most often cited exception to this is the presence on the long ago 1960 Democratic ticket of Sen. Lyndon Johnson, who probably carried Johnson’s home state of Texas for the Kennedy-Johnson ticket. People now on Social Security were barely born in that year of JFK and LBJ. The rollicking politics of this year, however, may set the stage for a real and meaningful selection for vice president. The emergence of dynamic and charismatic Kamala Harris now provides the Democrats with a running chance to win. She is confronted by a veritable parade of conventional politicians clamoring to be her running mate. None of them offer anything of real substance to the country or to a winning Democratic ticket. It's getting weird: Simple insult is Democrats' latest talking point. Can it stick? The word of the political moment seems to be "weird." It may have been unprecedented that President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race about 100 days from the election, but that isn't what has Democrats and Republicans sparring over the word "weird." Rather, since Vice President Kamala Harris, a younger, more meme-friendly candidate has stepped in as the Democratic candidate, a host of her surrogates have started labeling her opponents Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance as weirdos. It appears that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also reportedly under consideration for Harris' running mate, may have started this wave of attacks. (USA Today 7/29/24) READ MORE>>>>> |

Kamala Harris spurs meme frenzy on social media as Biden endorses her As President Joe Biden announced he would be ending his bid for re-election and endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as his successor, social media did what social media is best known to do. Truth to be told, social media users had been enthusiastically imagining Harris’s ascension to the top of the Democratic ticket since Biden’s disastrous debate performance at the end of June. Harris dancing. Harris laughing. Endless clips of her comments about a coconut tree. The next weeks will make clear whether Harris will be the Democrats’ 2024 nominee for president. But in the meantime, the internet picked up where it had left off. The Democrats calling on Biden to drop out of the 2024 election
President Biden is confronting doubts from within the Democratic Party about whether he should continue to run for reelection following his faltering performance in the first presidential debate. More than a dozen congressional Democrats have publicly called for him to exit the race. At least four other Democratic lawmakers said during an off-the-record call Sunday with House leadership that they believe Biden should step aside, according to people familiar with the discussion. One of the four, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), went public with his views on Monday. The Washington Post is tracking which congressional Democrats call on Biden to drop out as the party weighs whether he belongs at the top of the ticket.

Biden administration disturbed by Modi-Putin visit during NATO summit
Senior Biden administration officials are frustrated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as President Biden was kicking off a major NATO summit in Washington this week, underscoring the challenges the United States faces in a relationship it considers one of its most consequential. The Moscow meeting came despite concerns conveyed to New Delhi by several senior administration officials earlier this month that the timing would complicate the “optics” for Washington, according to several U.S. officials familiar with the matter. Biden gets support from key lawmakers as he tells Democrats he won’t step aside after debate
President Joe Biden stood firm Monday against calls for him to drop his reelection candidacy and called for an end to the intraparty drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal debate performance last month, as key lawmakers expressed support for him to remain in the 2024 presidential race. As anxious congressional Democrats returned to Washington weighing whether to work to revive his campaign or to try to edge him out, Biden sent them an open letter aiming to silence their skepticism of his fitness to lead the country for another four years. He insisted he wasn’t leaving the race and stressed that the party has “one job,” which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November. After a week of false starts, a coordinated effort by Biden and his campaign to shore up Democratic support appeared to be paying off, though he had by no means silenced his doubters. By late Monday, a sudden rush of public support from Democrats emerged — or at least some tempering of criticism — as Biden allies appeared to be trying to overpower the public and private voices calling on him to step aside.

The White House faces many questions about Biden’s health and medical history. Here are some answers
President Joe Biden’s terrible performance at the June 27 presidential debate has raised concerns about his age, health and ability to lead the federal government. Administration officials have blamed his confused and at times indecipherable answers at the debate with Republican Donald Trump on a head cold, jet lag and poor preparation at Camp David. But at 81, Biden has found his health to be a key issue for many voters going into November’s election. Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician, issued his first comment since the debate late Monday, after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre struggled to address questions about the president’s health at Monday’s news briefing.

Justices give presidents immunity for official acts, further delaying Trump’s trial
Donald Trump is immune from prosecution for official acts as president but can face trial for private conduct, a divided Supreme Court ruled Monday, declaring a broad new definition of White House power that may stand for generations and will further delay Trump’s election interference case in D.C. The 6-3 decision along ideological lines makes it highly unlikely that the 45th president will go to trial on charges of trying to subvert the 2020 election before voters cast ballots in this year’s presidential contest, in which Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee.

The Trump Trials: A history lesson for the future
The Supreme Court issued its “rule for the ages” Monday morning, and it was a doozy, so we wanted to land back in your inbox with what we think are the big takeaways from the court’s decision on presidential immunity. As much as the ruling draws new lines around what conduct can lead to the prosecution of future presidents, it also implies some pretty shocking reinterpretations of past White House conduct.
