Davis responded: “Well, I spent 25-years in uniform defending your right to say what you want and to practice your religion the way that you want. To me it is not very Christian to attack another Christian’s faith. I am not a fan of Franklin Graham. … I was a big believer in Billy Graham, I’ve got his books at home at my house and I have read them and I respect him greatly. … Franklin Graham has made himself one of the richest 1%, taking $1 million a year off the top from money people have given to do the lord’s work. That’s not the bible I grew up with. So, no, I am no fan of Franklin Graham, but I am a firm believer in religious conviction and religious faith and I defend the right of everyone to practice the way that they believe.”

The 11-point statement of faith declares, “we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female.” Many New Yorkers were outraged. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said he found it “extremely troubling” that Graham’s organization was involved in the city’s relief effort, and Mayor Bill De Blasio, a champion of LGBTQ rights, was immediately pressed to ensure the relief organization was “truly consistent with the values and the laws in New York City.” Religion News Service: Franklin Graham on his Central Park field hospital: ‘We don’t discriminate. Installing Franklin Phineas Hophni Graham as the nominal leader of Samaritan’s Purse was supposed to be a way to bring him back into the fold of respectability, but Franklin has spent most of his energy in recent years turning that post into a platform from which he hopes to become a culture-war player. He has used that platform to promote hate, not love — spouting some of the vilest anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-feminist, anti-everybody garbage you’ll hear from even the furthest fringes of the religious right.
