Crime is the top concern for most Louisianans this election cycle and many are unhappy with the way the criminal justice system has addressed the problem, a new poll of statewide voters shows.
A bill filed by Rep. Debbie Villio, R-Kenner, would make forfeiture of good time and credits — incentives that allow early release for good behavior — a mandatory penalty for incarcerated people who commit certain transgressions behind bars. Those penalties currently occur at the discretion of prison staff.
Crowley Republican Rep. John Stefanski, a candidate for Attorney General, has filed a bill proposing life imprisonment for people who distribute 28 grams or more of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that has pushed overdose deaths to record levels in Louisiana and the country.
Rep. Larry Frieman, R-Abita Springs, has filed a bill that would allow judges to revoke parole for people who district attorneys argue are "dangerous offenders." Anyone convicted of a violent crime, sex offense, drug production or terrorism could be deemed a "dangerous offender" under the bill.

Bill Thomas drops from House District 3 race
Haines Republican Bill Thomas announced on Friday that he is dropping from the House District 3 legislative race, leaving Democrat Rep. Andi Story of Juneau with an easy walk to victory with no opponent this year. All three Juneau candidates, including Democrats Sen. Jesse Kiehl and Rep. Sara Hannan, are now unopposed.
Thomas, now in his late 70s, is a former representative who served in the House from 2005 to 2013. He told friends and supporters that he just doesn’t have the time to campaign and also commercially fish this season.

Hays Backs Hopper in Denton-Area State House Runoff
Former Amarillo City Councilwoman Elaine Hays announced on Friday that she would be backing Andy Hopper in the Denton-area State House District 64 runoff. Hays, who finished third place in the GOP primary earlier this month, did not make it to a runoff, setting the stage for a rematch between challenger Andy Hopper and Lynn Stucky. Hopper, who nearly ousted Stucky in 2022, earned first place in the March 5th primary earlier this year.
