Reps. Pressley, Omar Introduce Long COVID Moonshot Bill
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05) introduced the Long Covid Research Moonshot Act, which would provide the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with $1 billion in mandatory funding per year for a decade to support studies, the pursuit of treatments, and the expansion of care for U.S. patients impacted by the condition. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced companion legislation last month. “Those experiencing Long COVID have been facing their challenges unheard for far too long, and they deserve a robust federal response that demonstrates that we see them, we have not forgotten about them, and we will not stop fighting to get them the care they need and deserve,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “Our bill builds on previous legislation to invest the resources necessary to confront this crisis head-on and it will help ensure that no one is left out or left behind in our pandemic recovery. I’m grateful to Rep. Omar and our colleagues for their partnership.” “Long COVID is a silent health crisis impacting over twenty-three million Americans, including one million children,” said Rep. Omar. “We must take bold action to help Americans suffering from long COVID. I’m proud to lead this effort in the House with Rep. Pressley to recognize long COVID as the public health emergency that it is and invest in countering the effects of this terrible disease.” “For far too long, millions of Americans suffering from long Covid have had their symptoms dismissed or ignored—by the medical community, by the media, and by Congress,” said Sanders, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). “That is unacceptable and has got to change. The legislation that we have introduced finally recognizes that long Covid is a public health emergency and provides an historic investment into research, development, and education needed to counter the effects of this terrible disease.” The Long Covid Research Moonshot Act is cosponsored by Reps. Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), Eleanor Holmes (DC), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Raul Grijalva (AZ-07), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Adam Smith (WA-09), Cori Bush (MO-01), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Barbara Lee (CA-12), James P. QUOTE BYTE: September 29, 2024:
“I think if Nasrallah was still alive, the threat of a broader conflict is even higher. This is a guy who cheerfully said, ‘Death to America, death to Israel.’ Now, when you’re a country and someone runs an organization that exists for the specific and defined purpose of destroying you, you have no choice but to treat that person as an enemy and to confront them. This is the guy that spent years cheering on suicide bombings that killed innocents, the kidnapping of Israelis. There are 60,000 Israelis right now who, for almost a year, have had to leave their homes in northern Israel and are living in hotels in Tel Aviv. Their kids are going to school online in conference rooms because the group that Nasrallah headed, which is Hezbollah, was using anti-tank weapons, not guided long-range missiles, anti-tank weapons, to target them and civilian infrastructure. So people had to leave. What country can have 60,000 people permanently displaced? That’s what this issue with Hezbollah is all about. Israel wants a six to 10-mile buffer between itself and Hezbollah so they can’t be using these shoulder-fired rockets to target cities and civilian communities, so people can move back to their homes. Hezbollah refuses to pull back and continues with those attacks. So Israel has no choice but to defend itself. Wiping out not just Nasrallah, but the senior leadership of this evil organization, I think, is a service to humanity.” -Marco Rubio on Meet The Press on the Israeli airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah: 9/29/24

How Democrats found a new approach to violent crime
Listen to the way Democrats talk about guns, violent crime, and the criminal justice system these days, and you’ll notice that things sound different from the way they did in 2020. That year, following a national protest movement centered around the high-profile police killings of unarmed Black Americans, including Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, Democrats focused their message on protecting citizens from police abuses and overhauling the criminal justice system, rather than reducing violent crime. But four years later, after a historic spike in gun homicide and an election cycle where Republicans attacked them over the issue, Democrats have found a new message.

"I have said many times they waited too long to fix the border. The good news is that the latest crossing numbers are lower than Jan 21 and staying near 1,500 a day. And the VP has been clear she will sign the bi-partisan border bill. It’s a fair argument to criticize them for waiting too long. But you also have to acknowledge that they are now having success. Which leads to the question of deportations. The Republican nominee says he is going to deport the 21 million people here illegally. He hasn’t said how he will do it." --Mark Cuban responding to a critique by riley Gaines about Kamala Harris and the border. 9/27/24

Omar Says Bigotry of Senator Kennedy ‘Just the Tip of the Iceberg’
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing earlier this week on the rise in hate crimes since last October was historic for its inclusion of testimony on crimes against Palestinians, Muslims, and Arab Americans, said Rep. Ilhan Omar on Friday—but the event also served to illustrate how Islamophobia is still widely accepted—and practiced—among top government officials, including elected lawmakers. The Minnesota Democrat responded to comments
made by Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) to witness Maya Berry, executive director of the Arab American Institute, in which the lawmaker accused Berry of supporting Hamas and Hezbollah and told her to “hide [her] head in a bag.” “It was telling that Kennedy along with his Republican colleagues could not avoid actively engaging in anti-Muslim hate speech during a hearing about the rise in hate crimes,” said Omar in an op-ed published by The Guardian. “As unfair remarks were hurled at [Berry], the American people witnessed the very purpose of the hearing in plain view for all: The normalization of hate speech is alive and well.”

Texas Gov Greg Abbott blasts Biden-Harris admin for allowing migrants to be flown into the US—Elon Musk calls it 'treason'
Texas Governor Greg Abbott appeared on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, where he discussed the ongoing migrant crisis and its impact on US communities. Abbott took aim at the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of illegal border crossings, dismissing its claims that the reduction in border crossings was due to federal policies. Instead, he credited Texas’ state-led initiatives, claiming they have been instrumental in reducing illegal immigration by approximately 85 percent since last year. He further argued that the Biden-Harris' administration’s solution to the border crisis is to allow migrants to be flown into the US and enter cities.

‘Clearly chicken you weirdo’: People respond to JD Vance sharing video he claims shows migrants grilling cats
Republican vice-presidential candidate Senator JD Vance continues to stoke outrage against foreign-born members of his own constituency, sharing video footage with his 1.9 million social media followers that he claimed showed African migrants in Dayton, Ohio “eating cats” — but instead appears to show nothing more than poultry cooking on an outdoor grill. “Kamala Harris and her media apparatchiks should be ashamed of themselves,” Vance posted Saturday on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter. “Another ‘debunked’ story that turned out to have merit.” Vance has claimed, falsely, in recent days that Haitians — who are not Africans — living in Springfield — a town of 58,000 which is not Dayton — were stealing, killing, and consuming their neighbors’ pets.

Given all the uproar over GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s baseless, utterly false and profoundly racist claims that Haitian immigrants are eating people’s pets in an Ohio town, I would likely to make a public statement that is supported by an equal amount of evidence: “Not long ago, billionaire Elon Musk ate my cat, Mr. Smushyface. Rumored migrant shelter in Chambersburg stirs up controversy
A rumored migrant shelter under consideration in Chambersburg, Pa., has stoked controversy as local officials mull zoning issues and community concerns. The Greene Township Board of Supervisors said Monday that there is no imminent proposal, nor have they been told to expect one. Instead, they’ve heard from a presumed Indiana-based contractor with zoning questions about the Scotland School for Veterans Children campus, a former orphanage dating back to 1895. Commissioners say the property, owned by a private company in New Jersey, isn’t properly zoned for the rumored shelter that could house as many as 1,000 unaccompanied minors. Several of the buildings have fallen into disrepair and have yet to be brought back to code. State Sen. Doug Mastriano and Rep. Rob Kauffman, both Republicans who represent Chambersburg, praised the board on Monday for their “strict interpretation” of local zoning ordinances and admitted their involvement isn’t necessary, but warranted nonetheless. Harris braces for the most critical moment of her political career at debate with TrumpKamala Harris’ joyful campaign will Tuesday be hit by the blunt force of reality — a debate with Donald Trump — the most menacing political foe of modern times. The vice president transformed the 2024 election after President Joe Biden’s abject debate showing against Trump on CNN in June led him to end his reelection bid. She restored several swing states to the electoral battlefield and has had Democrats dreaming of a stunning turnabout in a race most thought they were well on the way to losing. Yet her success in unifying her party, branding herself as a fresh voice of generational change and closing into a dead heat with Trump in polling has so far not cemented a reliable path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Indeed, if the election were on Tuesday, the ex-president, who has already defied an assassination attempt and scores of criminal charges, could still win.
